The Riley RMB, introduced in 1946, was a hallmark of post-war automotive engineering, combining traditional elegance with modern performance. This 2½ litre model featured a robust long-stroke four-cylinder engine with overhead valves and SU carburettors, producing 100 horsepower and enabling a top speed of 90 mph.
The car’s classic design included graceful lines, a prominent grille, and sweeping fenders, while the interior was adorned with high-quality materials and wood trim, offering a luxurious and comfortable driving experience.
The Riley RMB found significant success in Australia, underscoring its global appeal. Riley’s slogan, “as old as the industry – as modern as the hour,” aptly captured the RMB’s blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation, securing its legacy as a distinguished model in Riley’s history.
A good honest vehicle that was purchased through Shannons Auctions in 2019. Registered in Victoria and driven throughout the Peninsula on fine days. The Vendor drove the Vehicle to the Chicane Showroom and is mechanically strong!
The 1949 Riley RMB features a well-engineered mechanical package that highlights the advanced automotive technology of its era. At its heart is a 2.5-liter inline-four engine, equipped with twin camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers, producing around 100 horsepower. This engine is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox.
The RMB rear suspension consisted of longitudinal semi-elliptical leaf springs and anti-roll bar with the front end incorporating torsion-bars for a sporting independent front suspension system. This set-up together with an advanced rack and pinion steering unit gave the car exceptional road holding not surpassed until the modern era. Brakes were Girling Hydro-mechanical 10” diameter drums.
The 1949 Riley RMB’s mechanicals showcase a blend of innovation and traditional British craftsmanship, contributing to its reputation for performance and driving enjoyment.
The 1949 Riley RMB features a sleek and elegant body design that reflects the classic British automotive styling of the late 1940s. Its streamlined, aerodynamic shape is characterized by flowing lines and a gracefully curved roofline. The front of the car boasts a distinctive chrome grille flanked by large, round headlamps, while the rear is marked by a gently sloping boot and stylish tail lamps.
This particular cars body is quite straight, does have a small dent on RH rear roof & the paintwork requires a good Cut & Polish to bring back a good shine.
The 1949 Riley RMB interior exudes classic British luxury and sophistication. It features plush upholstery, providing comfort and elegance for both the driver and passengers. The dashboard is adorned with rich wood veneer, housing an array of neatly arranged, easy-to-read gauges and controls. The spacious cabin offers ample legroom and headroom, complemented by large windows that enhance visibility and create an airy atmosphere. Fine details, such as chrome accents and meticulously crafted switchgear, add to the interior’s refined aesthetic. Additionally, the RMB includes practical features like adjustable seats and a roomy boot, ensuring both comfort and functionality for extended journeys.
The Riley RMB was a high quality drivers car in its day and this example is proof of that. Very mechanically sound, good looking body and a comfortable Leather and wood finish interior. This car is a lot of car for the money and drives very well.
