1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupe: A Timeless Marvel of Elegance and Engineering

Few classic cars have the grace, presence, and provenance of this magnificent early model Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupe. A stunning example of mid-century automotive excellence, this vehicle was delivered new in Australia by Lanes of Melbourne to the prominent Harbig Family. As a symbol of sophistication and quality craftsmanship, this 220SE Coupe has not only survived the decades but continues to shine brilliantly today, thanks to meticulous care, comprehensive documentation, and a first-class restoration.

Provenance and Documentation

What truly sets this early 220SE apart is its impeccable history and documentation. Accompanied by full Mercedes-Benz Owner’s Books, the original Mercedes-Benz Data Card, and comprehensive history files, this car’s journey through the years is exceptionally well-documented. These materials tell a story of careful ownership and a reverence for the vehicle’s legacy, ensuring its authenticity is preserved for future generations.

An Australian Gem

Delivered new in 1962, this 220SE Coupe must have been a showstopper in Melbourne’s streets. Factory-ordered in the striking combination of 040 Black Duco paint paired with a sumptuous 204 Red Leather Interior, Timber laid dashboard, jewel like gauges with ivory Steering wheel, this car embodies pure luxury and style. In an era when such European elegance was still a rare sight on Australian roads, this Mercedes-Benz would have commanded admiration wherever it traveled.

Restoration Excellence

In the Mid 1990s, this Coupe underwent a full high-quality restoration, bringing it back to near concourse-level standard. The attention to detail and dedication invested in this restoration are evident; the car remains in fantastic condition today as an older restoration with various blemishes and imperfection from time, a testament to the craftsmanship involved. The odometer shows just 4,607 miles since this restoration was completed, a reflection of careful, cherished ownership.

Rare Early Model

This example is the rare early model, wonderfully distinguished by its outbound mirrors and artistic tail lights to mention but two. These unique touches, combined with the abundance of chrome and stainless steel detailing throughout the interior and exterior, create a stunning contrast against the 040 Black Duco paint. These accents elevate the car’s elegance to a new level, making it a dazzling sight both then and now.

Design and Performance

The 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupe is a masterpiece of design. Its elegant lines, restrained chrome detailing, and pillarless profile exemplify the marque’s commitment to unadulterated luxury of its time. Beneath its polished exterior lies a robust 2.2-liter fuel-injected inline-six cylinder engine, paired with a 4 speed automatic transmission, providing a refined and easy driving experience even by todays standards.

Every aspect of this car operates with grace, from the supple ride quality to the satisfyingly mechanical feel of its controls. All components remain correct and true to the original specifications, ensuring an authentic experience behind the wheel.

Timeless Elegance

This 220SE Coupe represents more than just a classic car; it is a piece of automotive artwork that encapsulates the elegance and engineering prowess of Mercedes-Benz. With its stunning color combination, outstanding provenance, and previous first-class restoration, this vehicle is a must-have for discerning collectors.

Whether admired as a showpiece or enjoyed while headed towards a vineyard, this 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Coupe stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of German craftsmanship and the enduring beauty of a bygone motoring era.
