The Ford Mustang was launched in mid-1964, being the car that introduced the world to the concept of the personal Sports Coupe, igniting the Muscle Car segment and drawing competitors like the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger into the fray. The 1965 model year saw a significant introduction in the Mustang lineup: the new Fastback model. This sleek design would later serve as the foundation for Carroll Shelby’s iconic GT 350.
By April 1965, the Mustang Fastback offered a range of options up to the GT equipment package, attracting buyers with features such as a full five-dial instrument cluster, disc brakes, enhanced sway bars, a faster steering ratio, and dual exhausts exiting through the rear valance, grille-mounted fog lights and deluxe interior options in addition to the available engines to choose from, all the way up to 271HP 289 Windsor V8.
Dubbed the 2+2 Fastback, it featured two front seats and a rear fold-down seat, encapsulating the spirit of sports performance with muscle car brawn. The 1965 Mustang Fastback was quickly credited as the pivotal model that sparked the performance handling muscle car era, thanks to its race track proven qualities.
This stunning 1965 Mustang A Code Fastback has seen only two owners in 32 years, with the previous owner holding it for an impressive 30 years and overseeing its complete restoration.
The car has been beautifully rebuilt, with the restoration occurring just 5,500 miles ago. This recent overhaul involved stripping the vehicle down to its Bare metal and giving it a fresh coat of paint in its original Factory Code ‘Springtime Yellow’. Nearly every aspect has been addressed, with upgrades, replacements or reconditioning made to major components such as the 289 Windsor engine, 9” LSD differential, Front and Rear Brakes and reconditioned Toploader 4 speed gearbox.
Further GT Option enhancements include GT Grille Fog Lights, GT Fuel Cap, GT Stripes, GT Style Wheels, GT Badging, GT instrument Dash and Rally-Pac Tachometer / Clock, with new parts like springs, shock absorbers, sway bars, interior trim, carpets, and steering wheel, HPC coated Try-Y headers and stainless 2.5-inch Dynomax exhaust system among other improvements during the build.
The restoration process was thorough, resulting in a car that presents straight and clean from its bare shell up.
The engine is a tuned and detailed 289 Windsor, featuring enhancements such as 30 Thou overbore Hypereutectic pistons, balanced and full blueprinted build, ported and polished 302 heads, an Edelbrock Torker intake, and a new Holley 600 4BBL carburetor. Additional upgrades include a high-volume oil pump, a Shelby Cobra alloy sump for increased volume, and Cobra air cleaner and rocker covers.
The transmission system boasts a 4-speed Top Loader with a shorter shifter and a light clutch. The exhaust setup includes ceramic-coated Tri-Y headers and a 2.5-inch polished stainless dual exhaust from Dynomax, finished with factory GT trumpets. Suspension improvements feature Grab-a-trak sway bars, Bilstein shocks at the front, Gabriel shocks at the rear, lowered springs, Lovell front springs, and Shelby traction rods.
The rear end has been upgraded using a K Code Mustang “9 inch” Ford with 3.55 gears and a limited-slip differential. The braking system features new Kelsey Hayes discs at the front, larger Ford drums at the rear. The fuel tank was also restored and painted. Period correct Steel wheels complete the package perfectly.
Body and paintwork were meticulously attended to with a back-to-bare-metal restoration and then repainting in the car’s original Springtime Yellow color using a 2-pack paint, for a durable and glossy finish. The bodywork is described as “straight as an arrow,” with a fully cleaned and painted underside, GT grille, driving lights, badging, a new front bumper and rear window glass.
The undercarriage has been insulated and coated with sound deadener, then painted in chassis black paint. The right-hand drive conversion is finished to a mirror standard.
Inside, the car is very clean and nicely appointed with black Pony Deluxe trim including full headlining, GT steering wheel, GT Dashboard instrumentation with Scott Drake Rally Pac Instrumentation, new carpets, restored rear quarter interior panels and full sound deadening insulation throughout. Very neat and very tidy.
A very well sorted Fastback, that has been loved, looked after and fully rebuilt by it’s long time previous owner. The current Owner drove this car to the Chicane Showroom from the Ballarine Peninsula and is regrettably parting, due to business reasons.
The Current owner has garaged and maintained this car for the 2 years of his ownership, only covering 3,000 miles. Was on Full Registration in South Australia for over 30 years. Currently on Victorian Club Reg. (Non Transferable)
