In 1967 Ford released a completely new Mustang design, in response to Chevrolet’s formidable new Camaro.
Its frame grew longer and wider, yet it preserved the iconic short deck and long hood silhouette that had endeared it to enthusiasts. Notable adjustments included an expanded radiator grille and a newly concave rear panel. Beneath the surface, Ford revamped the Mustang’s front suspension, resulting in enhanced maneuverability and a smoother ride. Opting for front disc brakes now offered power assistance, marking the debut of a dual hydraulic brake system for the ’67 model.
While the engine lineup largely mirrored that of 1966, the introduction of the 390-cid big block expanded choices. Nonetheless, the beloved small-block 289-cid V8 remained the preference of performance seekers, available in three levels of potency: 200 horsepower for the two-barrel C-code, 225 horses for the four-barrel A-code, and a formidable 271 horsepower for the top-tier Hi-Po K-code, a powerplant shared with the esteemed Shelby.
Inside, the ’67 Mustang showcased a fresh dashboard accompanied by an array of new features, including a fold-down rear seat in the fastback variant to enhance cargo space. The model continued to offer three body styles: hardtop coupe, fastback coupe, and ragtop convertible. Despite facing new competition, the original Pony Car maintained its dominance in 1967, with nearly half a million units finding homes, predominantly hardtops.
A favorite among classic car enthusiasts seeking an attractive and affordable slice of American muscle, the Mustang is an outstanding choice.
