Winning Bid: $52,000
The 1972 Valiant Charger XL sat in the sweet spot of Chrysler Australia’s popular VH Charger range, offering the sleek fastback styling and performance image the model was famous for, paired with a more refined and well-appointed specification than the entry-level variants. Positioned above the base model, but below the sportier R/T and 770 models, the Charger XL featured upgraded trim, improved interior comfort, and a broader choice of six-cylinder and V8 drivetrain options, making it an appealing all-rounder for buyers seeking both style and everyday usability. Its distinctive “short, sharp, and shapely” profile, bold colour palette, and wide stance cemented the XL as a quintessential Australian muscle car of the early 1970s—balanced, practical, and unmistakably part of the Charger legend.
This 1972 Chrysler VH Charger XL is a rare surviving example that retains its original matching-numbers 245 Hemi engine and automatic transmission. Presented in its factory Hot Mustard (YC) color and correct Neutral Tan XL trim (T1). Delivered new in South Australia and held by its first owner from 1972 until 2008, this Charger carries long-term custodianship and comes with its original Chrysler service book and owner’s handbook documenting its early life. Presented today as a well-preserved classic with its odometer reading said to be true, it remains one of the more genuine surviving VH XL models to surface in recent years. Having lived a careful life across only four owners, it continues to show the unmistakable character and patina of a car that has never been fully restored, but cherished with upkeep.
Factory equipped with Chrysler’s dependable 245ci Hemi six, this Charger retains its matching-numbers, as confirmed by the factory identification plates, stamped inner guard and original books.
The 245 Hemi starts easily, idles cleanly and performs exactly as expected from an unrestored survivor in stock condition. Mated to its BW35 auto transmission it offers smooth torque delivery and relaxed character making it one of the most cruisiest configurations in the VH Charger range. Mechanically sound, the car retains original and low mileage drive-line in keeping with its survivor character.
Finished in its factory colour of Hot Mustard (YC), the exterior presents as a survivor should with minor bumps, corrections and various blemishes but strong panels and a solid floor pan. The body retains the integrity of a long-term owned South Australian vehicle, with doors, sills and structural areas showing the solidity these cars rarely maintain after more than fifty years. Chrome work, glass and lenses remain in good order, consistent with a car that has been cared for rather than restored. W35 wheels and redline tyres are now fitted, to enhance its period presence without compromising authenticity.
The interior is a highlight, remaining largely original and impressively preserved throughout. The factory XL trim presents cleanly, with seats, door cards and headlining all in very tidy condition and free from the common abuse often found in Chargers of this era. The dashboard, gauges and switches remain in excellent order, demonstrating the care shown by previous custodians. With its original textures and gently aged ambience, the cabin reflects the survivor nature of this car.
A survivor-grade example of the highly regarded VH Charger XL, this matching-numbers Hot Mustard car offers originality, long-term ownership history and factory documentation including the original Chrysler books. A rare opportunity for collectors seeking a Charger that retains its factory specification and character. Survivor cars are increasingly scarce, and this VH XL represents an outstanding chance to secure a truly authentic piece of early-1970s Australian motoring history. Hey Charger!
