1973 FORD FALCON XA GT – RPO83

Rare Australian Muscle:

The Ford Falcon XA GT – RPO83 is directly attributed to Ford Australia’s Touring Car Championship racing program and the cancelled XA GT HO Phase 4 model.

The Option 83 cars represent an intriguing chapter of Ford Australia’s GT history.

This special example shows very close similarities to the only XA GT-HO Phase 4 ever complianced, with both cars factory specified with Calypso Green paint, 4-speed Toploader gearbox and Golde Windback Sunroof.

This car is 1 of 1 with its factory options and 1 of only 130 sedans with Option 83 in total.

The RPO83 Legend:

The Ford Falcon XA GT with Option 83, commonly referred to as the RPO 83 (Regular Production Option 83), is one of Australia’s most legendary muscle cars.

It was an upgraded version of the XA GT, developed in response to Ford’s canceled XA GTHO Phase IV program. This strategic move integrated these performance parts into a limited run of Falcon GTs built between April and August 1973. Ford had already built the many high-performance parts, so they discreetly installed them into the XA GT as an “Option 83”. A legend was born.

Factory Performance Option 83:

Mechanicals:

Originally fitted with a matching number higher spec 351 Cleveland from the factory, it has since been changed to a period-correct year 1973 D2AECA Cleveland square block replacement. It retains a Toploader 4-speed manual gearbox and features a 9″ limited-slip differential with various maintenance receipts over the years. The car also features Power Steering believed to be Dealer fitted.

Interior & Exterior:

The car was originally factory Calypso Green (J code), though it now sports a darker shade of green. Inside, the original Black Vinyl (Code B) trim has been replaced with cloth inserts.

The vehicle is believed to retain its factory unique RPO83 dashboard and is presented in good condition including the Superfringe Deluxe Push Button Radio and retains it wind back factory sunroof (untested), enhancing its collectability.

Provenance:

Originally sold by Dominelli Ford in NSW, this RPO83 is backed up by a Ford Letter of Authorisation and an ACCHS Report revealing its Option 83 ‘Performance Pack’.

It was purchased in the early 2000’s by a well known figure in the Ford Falcon GT circles, who then sold it onto the current Vendor.

Adored by its current owner and only being sold to fund a business venture, it bears the Victorian registration plates RRPO83 (sold separately), a tribute to its exclusive build.

Condition:

Though some corrosion is present in the doors, the overall body, boot, floor pans and sills seem quite clean. The interior presents well, with an upholstery recover back to original specs an easy job if required.

The vendor has recently rectified various mechanical items such as the fuel pump and Limited Slip Differential.

Fantastic options for either a high-end restoration, a mild restoration or continued enjoyment as is.

Summary:

This Ford Falcon XA GT RPO83 is a rare piece of Ford Australia’s history.

The RPO83 cars symbolize Ford Australia’s behind the scenes Touring Car Racing program.

A rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own a genuine RPO83 XA GT.
