The XA GT marked a big evolution of the Ford Falcon GT performance flagship, being the first model to be completely designed in Australia. It introduced sweeping “coke bottle” fastback styling, a wider track and a more aggressive, slipstream appearance. Beneath the new bodywork remained the proven Bathurst-winning formula: a potent 351 cubic inch 4V Cleveland V8, the strong Toploader 4-speed manual and Ford’s bulletproof 9-inch limited-slip differential. The XA GT program was the basis for the legendary Falcon GT HO Phase IV – Ford’s ultimate homologation racer developed to conquer the Australian Touring Car Championship. While a few race version GT HO’s were assembled, only one car was ever completed and complianced, before production cancelled.
Chicane Auctions proudly presents a great example of Australian muscle — a March 1973 built Ford Falcon XA GT Sedan, presented in factory Summer Gold Metallic paintwork over elegant Parchment Vinyl trim. This genuine XA GT features its factory matching 351ci 4V Cleveland V8, Toploader 4-speed manual transmission and 9-inch limited-slip differential — the ultimate performance trio from Ford’s golden era. Restored to show standard in 1999, this car enjoyed immediate success earning many trophies over a multiple year period including Best GT Falcon at All Ford Day – Geelong 2002.
This XA GT is powered by its matching number 351ci 4V Cleveland V8 (Casting code 2f30 for June 30 1972) , delivering unmistakable grunt and character. Rebuilt by Luke Forder and tuned by Grand Tourer, this car features a Holley 750 double pumper, high lift cam and exhaust combo. Mated to the factory specified Toploader 4-speed manual transmission and a 3.5:1 9-inch LSD, this mechanical package is strong and turn key ready. The car rides on genuine 1974 Bathurst Globe wheels, preserving its authentic look while heavy duty springs and sway bars are fitted for an aggressive stance. All mechanicals and suspension were restored during the comprehensive rebuild, ensuring that both appearance and performance match Ford’s GT heritage.
Bodywork was completely restored to show standard in 1999 by its then Owner / Builder – Ricky Micallef, a professional Panel Beater by trade. This XA stands out with its spectacular Summer Gold Metallic paintwork — one of 33 XA GT Sedans built in this colour. All chrome and external trim were either expertly restored or replaced, while all window glass was renewed, contributing to the outstanding presentation. The restoration quality was immediately recognized, with this car starring in a TV episode of Stingers and featuring in Ford Calendars, before being retired into a large private collection with its now current owner. Today, it remains in show-level condition, a testament to the extraordinary original craftsmanship and careful preservation over the past two decades.
The interior has been authentically restored by Neil Thompson, to its factory specification of Parchment Vinyl, delivering a crisp, elegant contrast to the car’s bold exterior colour. Seats, door cards, dash pads, and roof lining were professionally restored during the 1999 rebuild, ensuring an interior ambience that feels factory-fresh. Instrumentation, switchgear, and interior brightwork are presented in superb condition, further highlighting the attention to detail and respect for originality that defines this exceptional restoration.
With its rebuilt and tuned Cleveland 4V V8, Toploader manual gearbox, stunning Summer Gold over Parchment combination, one-of-one build specification and provenance as a previous Ford Australia-owned vehicle, this 1973 Ford Falcon XA GT Sedan is a great piece of Australian motoring history. Beautifully presented, it’s a rare chance to secure one of the finest XA GTs in Australia.
