MODEL OVERVIEW

The 1974 Porsche 911 S is a standout from the early G-series era, blending classic long-hood charm with mechanical updates. At its heart is a free-revving 2.7-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, derived from the legendary 1973 Carrera RS. In S specification, it produced 175 horsepower (130 kW) and 235 Nm of torque, channeled through a crisp-shifting 915 5-speed manual gearbox or the optional Type 925 Sportomatic transmission. With a kerb weight just over 1,070kg, the 911 S could sprint from 0–100 km/h in around 6.5 seconds – brisk for its time and topped out near 225 km/h. Fitted with distinctive chrome trim, 15-inch cast alloy ATS wheels and elegant body shape, the ’74 911 S strikes a perfect balance of classic style and usability. The handling remained sharp thanks to its low weight, torsion bar suspension and near 40:60 weight distribution. Legendary Porsche ventilated disc brakes at all four corners for always dependable stopping power. It’s the kind of Porsche that rewards spirited driving, turns heads and delivers a visceral connection that’s made it a cult favorite —light, responsive, and simple.

1974 PORSCHE 911 S COUPE

Chicane Auctions is proud to present this beautiful and highly desirable 1974 Porsche 911 S Coupe, an Australian-delivered, matching-numbers example offered with complete service history from new and an outstanding record of history spanning five decades including a recent full and complete engine rebuild. Finished in its rare original Porsche ‘Light Yellow’, the car wears its age gracefully with a light patina across the bodywork, reflecting its honest history and careful long-term ownership. While visually charming in its originality, this 911 S benefits from substantial mechanical enhancements to ensure an engaging drive. A full dossier of receipts accompanies the car, documenting maintenance, rebuilds and mechanical upgrades throughout its life. A true drivers car.

DRIVELINE

This 911 retains its original, matching-numbers 2.7-litre flat-six, now completely rebuilt and upgraded with triple-throat Weber 40 IDA carburettors—a period-correct enhancement reminiscent of the Carrera RS and celebrated for sharpening throttle response and induction note. The engine was professionally reconditioned and rebuilt with crankcase split, crankshaft reconditioned and balanced, all new pistons, cam shafts and head work completed over a 3 year period with new matching Weber carburetors providing strong and lively performance. An SSI stainless steel exhaust system complements the upgrades with a rich, purposeful soundtrack that perfectly suits the car’s character. Originally optioned with Porsche’s semi-automatic Sportomatic, this example has been upgraded to the highly regarded Type 915 five-speed manual gearbox at the same time the Engine started its recondition process in 2016. (original Sportomatic supplied separately with sale) The conversion, in line with factory original specification, remains mechanically authentic. Gearbox internals were all inspected and checked fault free, then serviced by Autocoupe as receipts show.

This car has travelled minimal miles since engine rebuild, with the overall mechanical setup being very fresh and remains true to the car’s DNA—pure, responsive and engineered for the enthusiast driver.

EXTERIOR

Finished in its rare and factory-correct Code 117 Light Yellow, this 911 S exudes the unmistakable charm of a well-preserved classic. Its aged patina tells a story of decades of careful ownership and use, favouring authenticity over restoration. The body presents very straight and well-aligned, with correct chrome detailing including the original window surrounds, headlamp rings, and exterior mirror — hallmarks of the 911 S variant in 1974. The factory floor pans appear very solid, with no structural concerns visible. Some minor corrosion bubbling is evident below the headlamps upon close inspection, though the whole body remains very tidy and honest – true to its age and presenting as a quality example. Completing the look are period-correct 15-inch ATS cast alloy wheels that have been hydro-blasted and fully reconditioned, further reinforcing the car’s originality and lending a purposeful stance. Altogether, it’s a beautifully balanced visual package that radiates genuine early 1970’s Porsche character.

INTERIOR

Inside, the cabin remains well presented, offering a true 1970s Porsche experience. The front seats pinstripe inserts are added for style but are not era correct to this year. The iconic five-gauge dash presents very well with all gauges crisp and clear. A Nardi performance steering wheel adds a touch of flair while remaining true to the period aesthetic. Subtle, correct details throughout—including switchgear, materials, and finishes—reinforce the car’s authenticity and integrity. The original Porsche Steering wheel is included with the sale (not pictured). Whether admired for its basic originality or enjoyed for its tactile charm, the interior reflects the same driver-focused spirit that defines every great 911.

NOTE:

The mph speedometer was installed with the recent gearbox change to 915 type with odometer drive not suiting the original kph unit. The vendor put in this mph speedometer to solve problem quickly and didn’t get around to re-fitting the kph unit with correct drive unit. The original kph odometer is supplied with the sale.

SUMMARY

Australian-delivered examples are especially rare, with only a limited number imported in right-hand-drive by Porsche’s then distributor, the late Alan Hamilton. This particular car was delivered new through Hamiltons Porsche in Melbourne, and its provenance is further elevated by a complete set of original books, manuals and a fully documented service history spanning decades that is too numerous to show in photos. Maintenance and care have been carried out by respected marque specialists over its lifetime, including Hamiltons Porsche, Weltmeister, and more recently at AutoCoupe—ensuring mechanical integrity and faithful preservation of its original character. This car has lived its charmed life in Victoria, with its long term black & white number plates KA911, included in the sale. With its matching-numbers drivetrain, full service history, mechanical performance upgrades and reconditioning, this car presents not only as a thrilling driver’s 911 but also a highly collectible example of Australian Porsche history.

For collectors and purist drivers alike, this desirable early G-series 911 is Australian delivered, expertly maintained and ready to enjoy.

A timeless classic that’s more rewarding at 80 km/h than most modern cars are at twice the speed.
