The Series 1 Mazda RX-7, launched in 1978, is a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car celebrated for its wedge-shaped styling and high-revving 12A rotary engine. Thanks to its near-perfect weight distribution, agile handling and front-mid engine configuration, the RX-7 offers a highly responsive driving experience that swiftly captured the hearts of motoring enthusiasts. Mazda’s motorsport pedigree in Australia was firmly established when the factory-backed RX-7 took on the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) under Group C regulations. With Allan Moffat at the wheel, the lightweight rotary machine repeatedly outperformed its bigger V8 rivals, culminating in a celebrated championship victory in 1983.
Chicane Auctions is proud to present this very early Series 1 Mazda RX-7 – presented in stunning condition. Transformed into a spectacular high-performance, show quality example that blends iconic Japanese design, Group C racing style and big turbo rotary power. Under the bonnet lies a professionally built 12A Extended Port Turbo rotary while the driveline and suspension have been comprehensively upgraded with high-quality components to handle and increase the performance. A high quality build… ready for track events, shows or Sunday drives.
Powering this stunning RX-7 is a 12A Extended Port Turbo rotary engine, built by Buzzme Rotarmotive and tuned by the rotary experts at Maztech Motorsports. The engine is controlled by a Microtech LT10S ECU and Turbosmart e-Boost 2 controller, working in harmony with a Hybrid Turbocharger, Aeroflow piping, a PWR front-mounted intercooler, RX4 radiator and oil cooler. The driveline features a rebuilt Series 5 Turbo gearbox and a Series 3 Limited Slip Differential, offering high-output capability. Series 3 adjustable struts at the front, adjustable coilover in the rear with upgraded sway bars front and rear for sharper handling and improved cornering performance. Stopping power and handling are equally well considered, with Series 3 disc brakes at all four corners. It rides on a set of Simmons FR-1 wheels that further underline its motorsport intent.
Visually, this RX-7 is an absolute showstopper. Finished in stunning Blue metallic paintwork, the body is enhanced with a high-quality, period-style Group C bodykit that amplifies its aggressive stance and vintage racing pedigree. The quality of the paintwork and panel fit is exceptional with the fully detailed undercarriage revealing colour-coded sway bars and suspension hardware. Only visible paintwork blemishes found are stone chips on front of rear flared guards. An beautifully aggressive looking car.
The interior is just as striking as the exterior. It features a full custom red leather retrim, setting a bold tone against the Blue exterior. A suite of premium AutoMeter gauges is housed in a bespoke pod, offering both function and flair. Carbon-dipped plastics extend across the dashboard, console and into the rear boot section, tying together the performance and luxury elements with a cohesive, high-end finish. Every touchpoint has been carefully considered to deliver a driver-focused cockpit with show presentation.
This 1978 Mazda RX-7 represents a great opportunity to own a unique example that’s been completely transformed into a high-performance Group C rotary showcase. Professionally built and tuned, this car blends turbocharged rotary power, motorsport ability, style and top-tier craftsmanship into a fantastic package. For enthusiasts of JDM performance and early RX-7s, it doesn’t get much better than this. Currently registered in Victoria, this car will be sold un-registered, as per Auction rules.
