1960 HOLDEN FB UTILITY - SOLD $72,350 inc BP
MODEL OVERVIEW:
The Holden FB Utility, produced from 1960 to 1961, was the workhorse variant of Holden’s first majorly restyled post-FE/FC series, blending American-inspired styling with Australian practicality. Sharing its front-end design with the FB sedan, the ute featured a broader, lower body with pronounced tailfins, a wraparound windscreen, and a distinctive horizontal-bar grille, all giving it a more modern, space-age appearance for the era. Under the bonnet sat Holden’s proven 132ci (2.16-litre) “grey” inline-six engine, paired to a three-speed manual gearbox with a column shift, delivering reliable performance for rural and urban duties alike. The steel cargo bed was designed to handle heavy loads, with a drop-down tailgate for ease of use, making it a favourite among tradesmen, farmers, and small business owners. Combining the rugged durability expected of a utility with a touch of style, the FB Utility remains a charming example of early 1960s Australian automotive design.
AUCTION CAR:
This 1960 Holden FB Utility is a fully engineered, modified production vehicle that merges classic Aussie ute styling with serious V8 muscle. It has been upgraded from its original 138ci six-cylinder to a Chevrolet 327ci V8 delivering an estimated 400+ horsepower. The conversion features a strengthened chassis with a Rod Hadfield chassis kit, a modified HR Holden crossmember, HR model front suspension, and a Ford 9-inch differential and axle assembly. Braking has been upgraded to a Holden HQ disc/drum system, while Torana rack and pinion steering has been fitted, with suspension, and drivetrain have all been extensively re-engineered. Every element of the build has been carried out with quality components and professional workmanship to deliver performance without losing the FB’s original charm.
DRIVE-LINE:
The Chevrolet 327ci small-block V8 is built with TRW forged pistons, fuellie double hump port flowed / matched cylinder heads, stainless steel valves, roller rockers with guide plates, a Victor Junior intake manifold, a Lunati solid camshaft, Comp valve springs, ARP fasteners, MSD ignition, a lightened flywheel, Holley 750 Demon, and a high-energy sump with Rod Hadfeild extractor and big twin exhaust. This high-performance combination produces an estimated 400+ horsepower. Power is sent through a Turbo 350 with HD stall converter with a floor shifter, mounted using a fabricated high-tensile crossmember. The floor has been reshaped and reinforced to house the Turbo 350 transmission and shifter while maintaining structural strength. The rear end features a Ford 9-inch differential fitted with HQ rear axles and drum brakes, coupled to the original FB leaf springs with Monroe gas shock absorbers. Steering is via a collapsible Holden Torana column and manual rack and pinion steering, connected with universal joints and high-tensile fixings for strength and precision. The HR Holden front suspension incorporates coil springs, a sway bar, and a disc brake setup for improved stability and stopping power. All modifications, from the reinforced chassis, diff housing to the transmission tunnel, have been engineered to ensure correct clearances, ground height compliance, and long-term durability. A SS drop tank is also fitted to complete the package.
EXTERIOR:
The FB Utility’s body retains its original vintage patina shop truck style in its original color of Wedgewood Blue with various blemishes all over that add character. The Rear Tub features nice wood panelling, and the tonneau cover with bows, are in good condition. Bumper bars are painted in matt silver. The light lenses are all in good condition. The car rides on Weld alloy wheels — 15x6-inch front and 15x7-inch rear, which give just the right stance without overplaying the visual aggression. Signwriting on doors and tailgate are only stickers and are easily removed.
INTERIOR:
The cabin keeps its original front bench seat, professionally recovered, with occupant safety upgraded to inertia-reel outer seat belts and a centre lap belt. The Dashboard is as factory with the addition of two hidden oil and Temp gauges and a more modern radio system. The door cards are custom upholstered. The automatic floor shifter is a Quiksilver unit.
