SUMMARY:
This immaculate 1967 Holden HR Premier represents an exceptional example of Holden’s highly regarded HR luxury sedan, restored from an extraordinarily sound and original vehicle to an outstanding show winning standard throughout.
Built at Holden’s Sydney facility, the vehicle retains its original matching-number 186ci Holden Red six-cylinder engine. Finished in its striking factory colour combination of Savannah Bronze Metallic with a Grecian White roof and Honey Fawn interior, it captures the style, refinement and unmistakable character of Holden’s flagship Premier range during the 1960s.
The vehicle was acquired from its long-term 92-year-old owner in Parkes, New South Wales. Prior to restoration, it remained an exceptionally solid and remarkably rust-free example, retaining its original floors and showing no evidence of the typical corrosion commonly found around the windows, windscreen, plenum chamber, bonnet, boot, guards or sills.
Although the original paint remained in fair condition, the decision was made following complete disassembly to undertake a comprehensive restoration of the entire vehicle. The body was stripped and refinished inside, outside and underneath by Emu Plains Body Shop with new metal used in any areas that showed sign of corrosion, with the original Savannah Bronze Metallic and Grecian White colour combination faithfully reinstated.
The Savannah Bronze Metallic paint displays outstanding depth and character in natural light, while the contrasting Grecian White roof perfectly complements the HR Premier’s elegant body design and extensive chrome detailing. Panel alignment, paint finish and exterior presentation have all been completed to an exacting standard.
The restoration was reportedly completed at a cost of over $100,000 and was finalised in May 2022. More than 100 photographs document the vehicle throughout the restoration process, providing an extensive record of the body, mechanical and interior work completed.
The body was completely dismantled during the restoration, with every component carefully inspected, restored or replaced as required. New galvanised and appropriately rated fasteners were installed throughout, with nuts and bolts tightened to factory specifications during reassembly.
Importantly, the Premier retains its original floors in outstanding condition. The exceptional quality of the original body provided an ideal foundation for the restoration and allowed the vehicle to be completed without the extensive structural repairs commonly associated with Holdens of this age.
The vehicle is accompanied by five original factory wheels, each powder-coated and fitted with its original-style hubcaps. Original NASCO exterior mirrors are also retained, further complementing the authentic factory presentation.
Externally, the body presents in outstanding condition with excellent panel alignment, deep high-gloss paintwork and beautifully restored chrome and brightwork throughout. Correct Premier badging, stainless-steel body mouldings, factory trim and distinctive rear garnish remain in place.
Mechanically, the entire driveline was comprehensively rebuilt by Frank Tedesco of Wetherill Park, Sydney. The original 186ci Holden Red six-cylinder engine was completely dismantled and rebuilt, with the internal components inspected and renewed as required.
When the engine was opened, its original bearings were reportedly still present, indicating that this was the first comprehensive internal rebuild of the engine. Hardened valves and valve seats were fitted during the process, allowing the engine to operate reliably on modern unleaded fuel.
The engine carries number 186A191675 together with an E287 casting date, confirming the block was cast on May 28, 1967. This is entirely consistent with the vehicle’s 1967 production and supports its matching-numbers provenance.
The original factory two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission was also completely rebuilt, together with the tailshaft and differential. The carburettor and fuel pump were rebuilt, while new fuel lines were installed throughout.
Supporting mechanical systems were comprehensively renewed, including a new radiator, cooling-system hoses, belts, ignition leads, distributor components, spark plugs and starter motor. A new exhaust system was fitted, the wiper motor was rebuilt and a new handbrake cable and sheath were installed.
The complete front suspension assembly was removed, media blasted and powder-coated in gloss black. New suspension bushes, bearings, ball joints, springs and shock absorbers were installed front and rear, while the steering box was rebuilt and an additional steering brace fitted.
The braking system was also comprehensively restored. The vehicle retains its desirable factory power-assisted front disc-brake configuration, with new brake components and lines installed throughout. The system was filled with DOT 5 silicone brake fluid, while the brake booster was also renewed as part of the restoration.
Less than 1,000km have been travelled since completion of the restoration, leaving the vehicle in outstanding mechanical and cosmetic condition.
Inside, the Honey Fawn cabin has been completely restored and presents in immaculate condition. Seats, door trims, carpets, dashboard pad and headlining have all been renewed or restored to closely replicate the vehicle’s original Premier specification.
The electrical system has been completely renewed with a new wiring harness installed throughout. Every exterior and interior light operates correctly, including the high-beam warning light, handbrake warning light, illuminated instruments and automatic gear-selection indicator within the steering column.
The original factory radio remains fitted and operates correctly, contributing to the authenticity of the cabin and overall restoration.
The interior also features a new heater, new laminated windscreen, new weather seals and rubbers throughout, together with five new seatbelts. The original rear venetian remains fitted, adding another desirable period accessory to the vehicle.
Holden’s Premier specification is evident throughout the cabin, with its woodgrain dashboard treatment, comprehensive instrumentation, factory radio, column-mounted automatic selector and additional brightwork providing the more luxurious atmosphere that distinguished the Premier from the Standard and Special models.
The original jack and tool kit remain with the vehicle, adding to its completeness and highly authentic presentation.
Introduced as Holden’s flagship model, the HR Premier combined the clean and confident styling of the HR series with the strongest level of comfort, equipment and mechanical specification available across Holden’s passenger-car range.
Its standard 186ci six-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, power-assisted front disc brakes, distinctive two-tone paintwork and extensively appointed interior made the Premier one of Australia’s most desirable family cars of the late 1960s.
Genuine matching-numbers HR Premiers restored to this standard are difficult to find. The quality of the original rust-free body, complete mechanical rebuild, authentic factory colour combination and extensive photographic restoration record distinguish this vehicle from the majority of examples available.
Beautifully restored, mechanically sorted and exceptionally well detailed throughout, this matching-numbers 1967 Holden HR Premier stands as one of the finest examples of the model, in Australia.
