SUMMARY:

An exceptionally well-presented 1969 Shelby GT350 Fastback with its matching-number engine, combining rare and desirable factory specifications, previous concours-quality restoration, 50+ years of Australian history and Australian friendly right-hand-drive steering.

Finished in striking factory Grabber Orange over Black Knit Vinyl, this genuine Shelby was originally specified with the desirable close-ratio four-speed Toploader transmission, Extra Heavy Duty Suspension Package and 3.25 Traction-Lok rear axle. Its accompanying Elite Marti Report confirms it as one of only five 1969 GT350s produced with its exact combination of factory colour, trim, transmission and options.

Power comes from the factory original Shelby-tuned 351ci Windsor V8. Its provenance is supported by the correctly dated 9B20 block casting-date code, indicating February 20, 1969, together with a VIN derivative ending in “2125” stamped into the rear of the block, corresponding correctly with the final four digits of Shelby serial number 9F02M482125.

The four-speed Toploader currently carries an RUG-AV identification tag, denoting a wide-ratio application; however, the gearbox’s internal gearset has not been independently verified. The differential retains a 1969 WFB-C identification tag for a 3.25:1 Traction-Lok nine-inch rear axle, matching the car’s documented factory specification.

Copies of the original Shelby build invoices, the Elite Marti Report and extensive supporting documentation accompany the car, providing an impressive level of provenance for this highly collectible GT350.

The 351 Windsor received a number of Shelby-specific performance enhancements, including an aluminium intake manifold, Cobra rocker covers and functional Ram-Air bonnet induction.

Factory rated at 290hp and 385 lb-ft of torque, the Windsor delivered the strong mid-range performance and effortless acceleration expected of a road-going Shelby.

Combined with its four-speed Toploader, 3.25 Traction-Lok rear axle and factory Extra Heavy Duty Suspension, this GT350 possesses the mechanical specification to match its unmistakably aggressive appearance.

The 1969 GT350 represented one of the most dramatic developments of the Shelby Mustang formula and was substantially different from a regular production Mustang.

Extended fibreglass front guards and a lengthened nose created its distinctive profile, while the fibreglass Ram-Air bonnet incorporated multiple forward-facing NACA-style scoops. A deep-set rectangular grille housed twin seven-inch headlights, with Lucas driving lights positioned beneath the front bumper.

Functional openings incorporated into the front guards assisted brake cooling, further demonstrating that the GT350’s dramatic appearance was driven by performance as well as design.

At the rear, a fibreglass boot lid and matching extensions formed a pronounced integrated spoiler, complemented by distinctive tail-lights and Shelby’s unique cast-aluminium centre exhaust outlet.

Together with its functional induction and cooling features, Extra Heavy Duty Suspension and factory Shelby roll bar, the GT350 was far more than a styling exercise. It was a serious high-performance grand tourer carrying genuine Shelby engineering and identity.

Inside, the Black Knit Vinyl bucket-seat cabin combines the Mustang’s top-level sports layout with the specialised equipment expected of a genuine Shelby.

Cobra and Shelby identification appears throughout the interior, including badging on the doors, dashboard and steering wheel. Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges for oil pressure and amperage are positioned prominently on the centre console, while the main instrumentation includes an 8000rpm tachometer and 140mph speedometer.

The Shelby-installed roll bar with inertia-reel shoulder harnesses further distinguishes the cabin, while this example was additionally specified with the desirable Sport Deck folding rear seat and AM radio—two options contributing directly to its exceptional documented rarity.

According to the accompanying Elite Marti Report, only 824 Shelby GT350s were produced for 1969, of which just 247 were equipped with the close-ratio four-speed manual transmission.

Only nine were finished in Grabber Orange, all with Black Knit Vinyl bucket seats. Of those nine cars, seven received the 3.25 Traction-Lok rear axle, six were equipped with the Sport Deck folding rear seat and only five were additionally fitted with the AM radio.

Shelby serial number 9F02M482125 is therefore confirmed as one of only five 1969 GT350s produced with this exact combination of factory equipment.

Adding considerably to its provenance is an extensive Australian history spanning more than half a century.

Records supplied by the vendor indicate the Shelby was imported into Australia around 1973 by Tom Copolous of Shepparton, Victoria. It was subsequently purchased by Gerald Hickey of Richmond in 1982 before passing to Kevin Musgrave in 1993.

Following Musgrave’s acquisition, the GT350 underwent a comprehensive restoration in conjunction with respected Melbourne specialist Frank Lacey. Completed to an exceptional standard, the restoration produced a multi-award-winning, concours-level example.

The quality of that work remains clearly evident today. Despite the passing of several decades, the Grabber Orange paintwork retains impressive depth and presentation, while the Black interior remains beautifully preserved. The engine bay, undercarriage, brightwork and exterior detailing reflect both the quality of the original restoration and the meticulous care the Shelby has received since.

The car has achieved Gold Class concours recognition and multiple awards following its restoration. It is also listed in the Shelby Registry and is accompanied by its Elite Marti Report, copies of its original Shelby invoices and supporting historical documentation.

While its rarity, provenance and presentation make it an obvious candidate for a significant collection or concours display, this GT350 also remains an engaging driving example.

The combination of the Shelby-tuned 351 Windsor, functional Ram-Air induction, four-speed Toploader and Traction-Lok rear axle delivers the mechanical involvement and unmistakable character that separates an authentic Shelby from the many recreations inspired by these cars.

Presented in exceptional condition with matching-number engine provenance, a documented one-of-five factory specification, concours recognition and extensive Australian history, this genuine 1969 Shelby GT350 Fastback represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire an iconic piece of Shelby history.

With its attention-grabbing Grabber Orange finish, aggressive Shelby-specific bodywork, factory performance equipment and Australian-friendly right-hand-drive configuration, this GT350 brings together rarity, authenticity, performance and presentation in one highly collectible package.
