1974 FORD FAIRMONT XB GS HARDTOP

MODEL OVERVIEW:

Introduced in 1973 as part of the XB Falcon Hardtop range, the Ford Fairmont XB with GS Rally Pack option stood as Ford Australia’s premium sports-luxury coupe. Based on the long, sweeping Hardtop body, it blended Fairmont refinement with the performance flair of the GS Rally Pack, which added sports instrumentation, twin-nostril bonnet, styled wheel covers, stripes and GS insignia. Buyers could select engines ranging from the 250ci six to the 302 and 351ci V8s, paired with either manual or automatic transmissions, along with an extensive options list. With its wide stance, frameless doors and unmistakable profile, the XB Hardtop became an enduring part of Australian motoring culture. Today, the XB Fairmont GS Rally Pack is sought after for its rarity, style and dual character as both luxury cruiser and sporting coupe.

AUCTION CAR:

This 1974 Ford XB Fairmont GS Hardtop is an exceptional example of one of Ford’s most iconic coupe body styles and, with its impressive factory options list, sits just a step below the legendary GT.

Of the 2,909 XB Hardtops produced, only 7 were finished in Burnt Orange with Black Trim, underscoring both its rarity and desirability.

Professionally restored, every aspect of the body, paint, interior, and mechanicals has been completed to high standard. Subtle performance-inspired styling enhancements complement its factory Rally Pack specification and high specification options list, striking the perfect balance between authenticity, style and performance.

DRIVE - LINE:

Powering this XB Hardtop is a fully rebuilt era-correct 302 cubic inch V8, presented in immaculate condition. Retaining its factory 2V specification, the engine has undergone a comprehensive mechanical restoration to deliver both strong performance and dependable reliability. It is matched to its factory correct FMX T-Bar floor-shift automatic transmission, also rebuilt during the restoration.

The suspension and steering system were restored from front to back, including a rebuilt power steering box and pump, while the braking system was renewed from booster through to calipers. The air-conditioning system was completely refurbished, serviced, and re-gassed. Factory Sports Handling Suspension ensures the correct ride and handling package, enhanced by widened steel 12-slot rims fitted with correct GS caps and trim, shod with new BF Goodrich tyres that set the stance perfectly. Completing the package, a new factory-style twin exhaust system provides the unmistakable Cleveland V8 burble from the rear.

EXTERIOR:

The star of the show is the Hardtops body, that has been completely stripped and refinished to a show-quality standard in its original factory colour of Burnt Orange, a colour standing proud with the bold spirit of the 1970s performance era. Subtle enhancements were tastefully integrated during restoration, including GT-style side vents that lend the car a more aggressive stance while remaining sympathetic to its factory heritage. All chrome, glass, rubbers, seals, and exterior trim have been either restored or replaced to as-new condition.

Factory-optioned with the desirable Rally Pack GS package, this Hardtop boasts the twin-nostril bonnet, GS decal striping, 12-slot steel wheels, and factory driving lights — all elements that define its period-correct presentation. The result is a striking coupe, professionally restored to a standard that ensures it will turn heads wherever it is seen.

INTERIOR:

Inside, the cabin has undergone a complete restoration in its original factory-specified Black trim, with every surface refurbished to high quality condition. The factory-fitted air conditioning and original radio/stereo cassette remain in place, complemented by the Rally Pack GS instrumentation — all functioning perfectly. Every seal, rubber, clip and trim piece has been renewed, while the seating and door trims have been finished to correct factory specification. From carpets through to the headlining, the presentation is exceptionally clean and faithful to its original configuration, showcasing both authenticity and craftsmanship.

The result is an interior that feels close to new, offering comfort, accuracy and attention to detail throughout.
