1974 HOLDEN LH TORANA SLR5000 - SOLD $146,880 inc BP

MODEL OVERVIEW:

The 1974 Holden Torana SLR5000 was a potent performance sedan straight from the factory, powered by a 240hp 5.0-litre (308ci) V8 engine mated to a heavy-duty M21 4-speed manual gearbox and a fine-spline limited-slip Banjo differential. Engineered for spirited driving, it featured power-assisted 254mm front disc brakes, firmer springs with matched shocks, a rear stabiliser bar, and dual exhausts. The interior was race-inspired, boasting high-back bucket seats, a sports steering wheel, unique SL/R trim and door cards, and full instrumentation including a tachometer, all enhanced by SL/R 5000 badging. Its aggressive styling left no doubt about its purpose, with bold body stripes, blackout detailing, front and rear spoilers, and prominent SL/R 5000 decals on the guards and boot spoiler. The SLR5000 laid the foundation for the homologation-special L34 and A9X models, which would go on to dominate touring car racing in the mid-1970s, with legends like Peter Brock and Jim Richards securing Bathurst victories. Today, surviving SLR5000s are rare and highly prized by collectors as icons of Australian muscle car history.

AUCTION CAR:

This 1974 Holden Torana LH SLR5000 is a genuine factory example of Holden’s high-performance four-door sports sedan, built with the 5.0-litre L31 V8 engine, M21 4-speed manual gearbox, and GU7 limited-slip differential. Finished in its correct factory colour of Absynthe Yellow (paint code 15893) with the original trim combination of Black with Ash “golfball” seat inserts (trim code 19V), the car presents in fully restored condition following a comprehensive rebuild completed approximately eight years ago. While restored to a high standard, the exterior features non-factory additions in the form of L34-style flared wheel arches and a A9X reverse-cowl bonnet scoop, enhancing its street presence and performance stance. Importantly, it retains its original factory matching numbers identity, with its said original bare L31 engine block supplied separately as part of the sale for authenticity and preservation. The car currently runs a rebuilt performance engine for spirited driving purposes and is also fitted with upgraded Simmons alloy wheels.

DRIVE-LINE:

This SLR5000 is fitted with Holden’s high-performance L31 308ci (5.0-litre) V8, paired with the M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual gearbox and a heavy-duty GU7 limited-slip differential with 2.78:1 final drive ratio, all reconditioned upon restoration. The engine has been set up for spirited driving and reliable use, while still retaining the SLR5000’s characteristic torque-rich delivery. During the restoration, every driveline component was inspected, rebuilt, or replaced — including a reconditioned gearbox, vented brakes, renewed clutch assembly, and serviced LSD. All , bushes, universal joints, mounts, steering and tail-shaft components were replaced to ensure smooth power delivery. The V8’s strong low-end pull combined with the manual gearbox results in a driving experience that captures raw, mechanical engagement for which the legendary LH SLR5000 is renowned for.

EXTERIOR:

Finished in its factory Absynthe Yellow (code 15893), the body has been restored to a very straight, well presented example, with all SLR5000 badging and blackouts consistent with the model. The restoration, completed eight years ago, incorporated L34 flared wheel arches to accommodate the wider wheels and tyres, a A9X reverse-cowl bonnet scoop and painted bumper bars for a more aggressive race style look. The car rides on Simmons style multi-piece alloy wheels and the exterior finish displays the depth and gloss expected from a quality repaint.

INTERIOR:

The interior retains its original factory trim specification of black vinyl with Ash “golfball” cloth seat inserts (trim code 19V), faithfully restored to reflect its 1974 presentation. Features include factory-style instrumentation and radio, steering wheel, centre console  and all correct seating and door trims. All upholstery, carpets, and interior finishes are in excellent condition, with restoration workmanship maintaining the correct period appearance while ensuring long-term durability.
