1976 HOLDEN HX LE COUPE - SOLD $87,580 inc BP

MODEL OVERVIEW:

The 1976 Holden HX LE Coupe represents the final chapter of the full-size 1970's Australian two-door coupe era, with just 600 examples produced as a luxurious send-off to the Coupe lineage. The LE was distinguished by its exclusive metallic LE Red paintwork, accented with gold pinstriping, gold-finished honeycomb polycast wheels, and a GTS styling package including a front air dam, rear deck spoiler, and quad headlights. Under the bonnet sat Holden’s 5.0-litre V8 paired with a Turbo 400 3-speed transmission and LSD Salisbury rear end, delivering refined performance matched with dual exhausts. Inside, the LE Coupe was comprehensively appointed with air conditioning, power windows, seats trimmed in brushed knit cloth, burl walnut style finish across the full gauge dashboard, special door trims and Headlining with a factory sports steering wheel. As the swansong of the big Holden coupe, the HX LE remains a highly collectible blend of Australian muscle and personal luxury.

AUCTION CAR:

Offered for auction is a genuine 1976 Holden HX LE Coupe — the final and most luxurious expression of Holden’s full-size 1970's two-door coupes. One of only 600 LE Coupes produced, this example is presented in dry, straight condition with quality exterior paintwork and honest overall presentation reflective of its life in central Victoria with only minor blemishes. These limited-edition models were factory-equipped with virtually every luxury and performance option available at the time, making them a true grand touring classic. This car is a desirable example.

DRIVE-LINE:

The HX LE was factory fitted with Holden’s 308ci (5.0-litre) V8 engine producing 240 bhp (179 kW), paired with a smooth-shifting Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission and a console-mounted T-bar selector. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Salisbury limited-slip differential. The LE features power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, and a dual exhaust system with chrome outlets — all of which are retained in this example. Mechanically, this car remains faithful to specification and is powered by an era-correct 308 V8 engine.

EXTERIOR:

Finished in the LE’s exclusive metallic red — factory designated as “LE Red” — this coupe features the correct gold pinstriping and gold-finished honeycomb polycast wheels, as per original Holden styling. Benefitting from a central Victorian country life, with a quality previous repaint and body presenting well with minor blemishes showing. All signature LE features are present including the front air dam, rear deck spoiler, exterior sports mirrors, twin exhaust outlets, and quad halogen headlights (2 quartz high-beam). The coupe maintains its original visual identity with correct brightwork, glass, and badging in place. It stands as Holden’s final evolution of its long-wheelbase Coupe platform of the 1970’s.

INTERIOR:

Inside, the LE delivers on its reputation as a personal luxury coupe. The factory brushed knit cloth trim remains in honest, tidy condition. Reclining front bucket seats, burl walnut trim on the instrument panel, console and doors, power-operated windows, full length vinyl headlining  and cut pile carpeting reflect the high level of factory fitout. Original features such as the push-button radio, sports steering wheel and full instrumentation gauges (including electric clock), were standard equipment. The cabin retains its period charm, offering a comfortable and sophisticated grand touring environment that was unmatched by any Australian-built coupe at the time.

SUMMARY:

This 1976 Holden HX LE Coupe is an authentic example of Holden’s most luxurious limited-edition performance coupe. Offered with original factory features and an era-correct driveline, this LE presents a rare opportunity for collectors seeking a genuine survivor with strong characteristics to improve on if need be. Driven into the Chicane showroom from Country Victoria after being in storage, mechanical servicing and minor items like intermittent working electric windows require attention. With only 600 units ever built, this final chapter in Holden’s two-door heritage is a highly sought-after collectible that blends muscle car appeal with refined Australian grand touring design. Ready to enjoy or further revitalise to higher standard, this HX LE is a compelling entry into an increasingly  corner of Australian motoring history.
