Distinctive SS styling cues included bold striping with SLR level interior, while beneath the surface the platform delivered balanced handling via its lightweight body and well-sorted suspension package. Today, the Torana LX SS holds a unique position in the Australian muscle car history for it's strong connection to Holden’s golden era of performance engineering and enduring Australia car culture.
AUCTION CAR:
1976 HOLDEN TORANA LX SS HATCH
GENUINE SS (LX8VD77) – 355 STROKER V8 – STRONG DRIVELINE – SHOW CAR PRESENTATION
A standout example of Australian muscle, this 1976 Holden Torana LX SS Hatch combines genuine SS pedigree with long-term ownership and a professionally executed high-performance build. A true LX SS (LX8VD77), delivered in L20 M20 specification, it has been improved upon by its current owner over 30 years ownership and is only a three-owner car from new, supported by its original Holden books.
Presented today as a highly executed show, street and strip package, it combines factory SS provenance with a fully developed and upgraded driveline with high quality presentation that results in a highly capable and visually striking Torana.
DRIVELINE
The engine is built around a brand new Holden VT 5.0L block, stroked to 355ci using a Harrop crankshaft and configured for high-performance street strip use. The combination includes machined VN cylinder heads, a Harrop single-plane high-rise intake manifold and Holley 750cfm double pumper carburettor, delivering strong airflow and throttle response.
Internal specification includes solid camshaft operation, Yella Terra roller rockers and a high-volume oiling system, supporting durability under load. Exhaust is via HPC-coated Haddad extractors into a custom twin system.
Cooling is handled by an Aussie Desert Cooler aluminium radiator with SPAL thermo fans, ensuring stable operating temperatures.
Transmission is a fully manualised 2-speed Powerglide, paired with a 3500rpm TCE stall converter and operated via a B&M Stealth Pro Ratchet shifter.
Power is delivered through a Ford 9-inch differential with 3.5:1 gearing, full spool centre and 31-spline Moser axles — a proven high-strength combination designed to handle its high output. The chassis is underpinned by a Rod Shop chassis kit, improving rigidity and structural integrity. Suspension is configured for performance use, supported by upgraded components. Braking has been upgraded with a Hopper Stoppers front brake kit featuring AU Series II twin-piston calipers and 290mm slotted rotors, paired with HQ rear drum brakes. The vehicle runs HQ stud pattern front and rear, ensuring compatibility and strength.
EXTERIOR
Finished in its factory code Mandarin Red, the body presents to a high standard with strong paint depth and clean panel alignment. The finish highlights the LX Hatch’s sharp lines and proportions, delivering a crisp and well-resolved presentation. Overall appearance reflects a high-quality build with clear attention to detail, maintaining its correct SS identity while presenting as a refined street machine with its Weld Wheels and reverse cowl giving a glimpse of its potential to all lookers.
INTERIOR
The cabin is trimmed in 18V Black & Grey Golfball vinyl and presents in near unmarked condition, retaining a factory-style layout and appearance. A Classic Auto Sound system has been integrated, offering a period-style radio with modern functionality including digital tuning, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
The interior remains clean, cohesive and highly original in presentation, complementing the vehicle’s dual show and street intent.
