1978 HOLDEN HZ GTS - SOLD $84,800 inc BP

MODEL OVERVIEW:

The Holden HZ GTS was introduced in 1977, and was the spiritual successor to the Monaro GTS, blending performance with luxury in a uniquely Australian formula. Externally, the HZ GTS featured bold styling enhancements including a distinctive four-headlight front end, integrated body-coloured bumpers, GTS-specific grille and badging, blacked-out trim with front and rear spoilers, giving it a purposeful stance. Underneath, the big news was the introduction of Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) and four wheel Disc Brakes transforming the ride and handling characteristics, making it by far the best-driving Holden of its size to date. Power came from Holden’s proven 4.2 or 5.0-litre V8 (L31), paired with either a heavy-duty M21 four-speed manual or a TH400 automatic, sending power to a Salisbury LSD. The interior offered a sports-themed layout with GTS badging, high-backed contour bucket seats, full instrumentation. The HZ GTS holds a unique place in Holden history as the last of the big, V8-powered sports sedans of the 1970's.

AUCTION CAR:

This genuine 1978 Holden HZ GTS is a high quality example of Holden’s final full-sized GTS performance sedan. Factory optioned with the 5.0-litre L31 V8 engine, M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, GU4 Salisbury LSD with 3.08:1 gearing and four wheel disc brakes. Finished in its correct Palais White paint (code 30521) with Buckskin vinyl trim and matching “golfball” seat inserts (trim code 63V), the car has undergone a complete, high-quality restoration to exacting standards done. Every aspect — from mechanicals to paintwork and trim — presents in exceptional order, making it one of the finest examples we have encountered.

DRIVE-LINE:

This HZ GTS is fitted with its fully rebuilt era correct L31 308ci - 5.0-litre V8, paired to the M21 4-speed manual gearbox and a Salisbury limited-slip differential to GU4 specification with 3.08:1 final drive ratio, together with Power Steering, Air-Conditioning and 4 wheel disc brakes - a full house. During restoration, the complete driveline was rebuilt to close factory specification, including a full engine overhaul, reconditioned gearbox, braking system and refreshed differential. Supporting systems such as the cooling, ignition, fuel delivery, air cond., power steering and exhaust were all renewed to ensure reliable, factory correct performance. The result is a driveline that delivers  a smooth muscular torque curve expected of the L31, with the M21’s tight, mechanical shift feel together with the upgraded RTS suspension and Four wheel disc brakes — all functioning in perfect working order.

EXTERIOR:

Presented in its correct Palais White (code 30521), the body has been restored to an exceptionally high standard, with straight panels, precise alignment, and deep, high-gloss paintwork. All GTS-specific features are present, including the colour-coded sports grille, body side flutes, quad headlamp front, and appropriate badging. The exterior detailing extends to correctly refinished brightwork, restored bumpers, and new weather seals. Currently 15" GTS style wheels are fitted, with the full set of GMH factory original Factory 14" GTS wheels with matching Maxxis tyres in mint condition are supplied with the car for authenticity. The overall finish and attention to detail place this example among the very best of its kind, with presentation that would satisfy the most discerning collector.

INTERIOR:

Inside, the HZ GTS has been beautifully restored into absolutely stunning condition to its original 63V trim specification. Featuring Buckskin vinyl with “golfball” cloth seat inserts — a hallmark of late-1970s Holden sports sedans. The restoration has retained very close factory authenticity, with the correct GTS sports instrumentation, sports steering wheel (trimmed in Leather), centre console, and even the correct 1978 radio all in place. Seats, door trims, carpets, and headlining have been all been replaced, with every detail — from the grain of the vinyl to the correct style of stitching — near factory standards. The result is an interior that not only presents as new but closely reflects the car’s 1978 showroom appearance.
