SUMMARY:

This genuine 1978 Holden HZ GTS represents an exceptional example of Holden’s final full-sized V8-powered GTS performance sedan, restored to an outstanding standard while retaining its highly desirable specification and presentation.

Finished in its correct Palais White paintwork with matching Buckskin trim, the vehicle combines muscular late-1970s Holden styling with a beautifully restored and highly authentic presentation throughout.

Factory optioned with Holden’s desirable L31 5.0-litre V8 engine, M21 4-speed manual transmission, GU4 Salisbury limited-slip differential and four-wheel disc brakes, this HZ GTS represents a genuine “full house” specification example. Every aspect of the restoration has been completed to an exacting standard, resulting in one of the finest HZ GTS restorations we have encountered.

The driveline has been comprehensively rebuilt to close factory specification, centred around its fully rebuilt era-correct L31 308ci V8. The M21 manual gearbox and GU4 Salisbury LSD have also been rebuilt, while supporting systems including cooling, ignition, fuel delivery, power steering, air conditioning and braking components have all been renewed throughout the restoration process.

Importantly, the suspension system has also been extensively refreshed with new Kings Springs and Koni shock absorbers fitted, significantly enhancing ride quality, handling and overall road feel while complementing Holden’s RTS suspension tuning philosophy. A brand new Pacemaker extractor and twin exhaust system has also been fitted, delivering the unmistakable deep V8 soundtrack expected of a genuine Holden performance sedan.

On the road, the vehicle delivers the smooth muscular torque curve synonymous with Holden’s L31 V8, complemented by the tight mechanical shift feel of the M21 gearbox, upgraded suspension package and confident braking performance provided by the factory four-wheel disc setup. The result is a highly refined and exceptionally well-sorted Australian performance sedan that performs as impressively as it presents.

Externally, the body has been restored to an extremely high standard in its correct Palais White finish, with outstanding panel alignment, deep high-gloss paintwork and crisp detailing throughout. All correct HZ GTS features remain present, including the colour-coded sports grille, quad-headlamp front end, body side flutes and correct badging. Brightwork, bumpers and exterior trim have all been restored or refinished to exceptional standards, while new weather seals complete the restoration.

The car sits on its full set of original GMH factory 14-inch GTS wheels fitted with BF Goodrich tyres in excellent condition, perfectly complementing the authentic late-1970s Holden performance appearance.

Inside, the cabin presents in absolutely stunning condition and has been restored to its original 63V trim specification. Featuring Buckskin vinyl upholstery with the iconic “golfball” cloth seat inserts, the interior perfectly captures the style and atmosphere of Holden’s late-1970s performance era. GTS sports instrumentation, centre console, factory radio and sports steering wheel trimmed in leather are in place, while seats, carpets, headlining and trims have all been restored or replaced to close factory standards.

The HZ GTS marked the final evolution of Holden’s original full-sized Monaro-based GTS sedan lineage and today represents one of the last and best true Australian muscle sedans of the 1970s.

Genuine factory V8 manual examples restored to this level are becoming increasingly difficult to source and continue to attract strong collector interest Australia wide.

Beautifully restored and exceptionally well detailed throughout, this 1978 Holden HZ GTS stands as one of the finest examples of the model available without doubt.
