1988 FORD GT40 - GT DEVELOPMENTS
MODEL OVERVIEW:
The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk I is one of the most evocative supercars of its era. Ford's Le Mans contender was built in street trim in small numbers to satisfy homologation rules. Constructed by Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough UK, the road going Mk I featured the same pressed-steel monocoque chassis and Fiberglass bodies with the mid-mounted 289 cubic-inch V8 as the race cars, but with modest concessions to comfort such as carpeting, door pockets, and reversing lights. With a top speed well over 160 mph, it was among the fastest road cars in the world, yet its dramatic proportions and race-bred engineering made it unlike anything else on public roads in the 1960s. Because only a handful of genuine Mk I road cars were ever produced, highly accurate recreations by respected firms such as GT Developments have become sought-after in their own right.
AUCTION CAR:
On offer is a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk I recreation, factory built by the highly regarded GT Developments in the UK. Known for producing some of the most faithful GT40 recreations of the era, GT Developments engineered their cars with specification accuracy at the core. This example features a dimensionally correct Mk I body and interior mounted to a tubular steel chassis constructed in keeping with the original design. With its period-style Ford small-block V8 and authentic detailing, the car is a striking homage to one of the most iconic endurance racers of all time.
DRIVE - LINE:
Power comes from a period-style Ford 302 cubic-inch Windsor V8, breathing through a quartet of Weber 48 IDA downdraft carburettors—just as the works GT40s of the 1960s did. The engine delivers both the induction roar and the performance expected of this legendary machine. A robust five-speed Renault UN1 transaxle channels the power to the rear wheels, ensuring strong performance and tractability. Stopping power is delivered by four-wheel disc brakes, completing a driveline package that stays faithful to the engineering ethos of the original.
EXTERIOR:
This cars bodywork is the star of the show and is dimensionally correct to the Mk I GT40, with its iconic low-slung silhouette, wide stance and aggressive proportions that captivated Le Mans spectators in the mid-1960s. The GT Developments body is widely regarded as a very high quality reproduction. Finished with period-correct detailing, from the scoops and vents to the competition-style fuel fillers, every element of the exterior pays tribute to the original design. Presented in great condition, and presented with racer style decals, this GT40 recreation captures the true presence of the legendary Ford racer.
INTERIOR:
Inside, the drivers cockpit has been crafted to mirror the Mk I GT40’s minimalist environment in the same way the genuine 31 street versions were. The Right hand gear shift, correctly patterned seats, door pockets, dash layout, toggle switches and correct instrumentation create an atmosphere that is unmistakably authentic. With its low driving position and wide sills, climbing inside will instantly instantly transport any driver back to Ford’s racers of Le Mans in 1966.
