SUMMARY:
Representing the ultimate factory evolution of Holden’s Australian-built V8 Ute, this 2017 Holden VFII Magnum Ute – Build #007 combines limited-production exclusivity with serious performance engineering, a highly desirable six-speed manual transmission and just 3,482 kilometres from new.
Developed as part of Holden’s final limited-edition performance program, the Magnum was considerably more than a cosmetic farewell model. Based on the VFII SS-V Redline Ute, Holden further developed its braking, suspension and powertrain cooling systems to create what it described at launch as the quickest and best-equipped Holden Ute ever produced.
Only 240 examples were built for the Australian market, making the Magnum the most exclusive of Holden’s three final limited-edition Commodores.
Power comes from Holden’s legendary naturally aspirated 6.2-litre LS3 V8, producing 304kW at 6,000rpm and 570Nm at 4,400rpm. In this example it is paired with the highly desirable six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
Rather than pursuing additional headline power, Holden concentrated its engineering efforts on enabling the vehicle to repeatedly exploit the LS3’s performance. The Magnum became the first and only production Holden Ute equipped with enhanced engine and transmission cooling developed to meet GM Level 3 track-performance requirements, placing it alongside some of General Motors’ most capable performance models.
GM Level 3 was an internal General Motors engineering standard concerned with a vehicle’s ability to manage engine and transmission temperatures during prolonged high-speed circuit use.
For the Magnum, this meant its cooling systems were developed to withstand an intensive track-validation program, reported at the time as a 24-hour race-pace test regime at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan, without overheating or requiring excessive performance reduction.
Manual-transmission examples incorporated a dedicated engine oil cooler and an in-tank transmission-fluid cooler. These additions improved thermal management during sustained high-load driving, creating a naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive V8 Ute engineered for considerably more than straight-line performance.
Braking received equally serious attention. Build #007 is equipped with four-piston Brembo calipers front and rear, operating on large ventilated and cross-drilled rotors at all four corners. The front features sophisticated two-piece floating rotors with aluminium hats, contributing to the brake package’s approximately 3.25kg reduction in unsprung mass while improving heat management and braking consistency under repeated high-speed use.
Together, the cross-drilled rotors and four-piston Brembo calipers provide one of the most substantial factory braking packages fitted to an Australian-produced Holden Ute.
Holden engineers developed a Magnum-specific FE3 rear suspension tune. Rear spring rates were reduced by approximately 26 per cent, the rear dampers were shortened by 10mm and the rear ride height was lowered by approximately 15mm compared with the standard SS-V Redline Ute.
These changes reduced the vehicle’s rake, centre of gravity and rear roll centre while improving ride quality, traction and chassis balance. Payload capacity was deliberately reduced from 620kg to 540kg as Holden shifted the Magnum’s emphasis away from traditional load carrying and towards dynamic performance.
Completing the chassis package are distinctive 20-inch split-forged alloy wheels, measuring 8.5 inches wide at the front and 9 inches at the rear. They are fitted with 245/35 R20 front and 275/30 R20 rear performance tyres.
Combined with the substantial Brembo braking package, lowered FE3 suspension and wider rear footprint, these wheels gave the Magnum a more purposeful stance and greater dynamic ability than the regular SS-V Redline Ute upon which it was based.
Finished in striking Son of a Gun Grey Metallic, this exceptional example has travelled just 3,482 kilometres from new and has been fastidiously preserved throughout its life. It has been stored beneath its included custom-fitted Magnum car cover and was treated from new with Premium Protektive ceramic coating. Titanium window tinting was also applied when new to assist in protecting the cabin and interior finishes.
An M-Protekt GPS tracking system has also been installed and can be registered by the new owner, providing an additional level of vehicle security.
Its provenance is equally impressive. The Magnum has had just one owner from new, a former Holden Engineering employee who obtained photographs of this very vehicle progressing along the Holden production line—a particularly valuable historical record of one of the final Australian-built Holden performance Utes.
The car is accompanied by an extensive collection of original documentation and special delivery items, including its factory books, delivery paperwork, build documentation, production-line photograph and unique dual-key presentation case. The case incorporates a video screen featuring Holden’s official presentation of its final limited-edition models.
As Build #007, with one-owner provenance, exceptionally low kilometres and a remarkable collection of factory documentation, delivery items and production-line photographs, this VFII Magnum represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most significant and comprehensively preserved examples of Holden’s final Australian-built performance Ute.
