1970 FORD FALCON XY GT

SOLD: $195,500 ( 100% to Vendor ) + Buyer's Premium 8.8%

MODEL OVERVIEW:

Forged in the heat of competition and unleashed on Australian roads in 1970, the Ford Falcon XY GT remains one of the greatest legends of the muscle car era. Powered by the imported D block 4V 351ci Cleveland V8 and rock-solid driveline, the XY GT wasn’t just built to perform — it was built to win. And win it did, conquering the 1971 Bathurst 500 and etching its name into Australian motorsport history. With its signature ‘Shaker’ induction scoop snarling through the bonnet and Bathurst-bred engineering under the skin, the XY GT became a symbol of power, pride, and performance. Produced for only two years, the XY GT was built in very limited numbers — 757 units in 1970, 800 in 1971 and 300 units of the ultimate Phase III variant. An icon of Australian motoring culture.

AUCTION CAR:

This 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT Sedan is presented in its factory-correct Yellow Ochre with Saddle trim, as delivered from the Ford Broadmeadows factory as a desirable factory L-code 4-speed manual Toploader car. This example retains correct GT identification and its authenticity is reinforced by both an ACCHS Deluxe Report and ICAARS certification, with ICAARS noting the vehicle as a “Very clean XY GT”. A well-known car within GT circles, this XY GT carries recognised provenance, having been registered in New South Wales for many years throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s under the memorable registration “HOHOHO” — a detail still recalled by many long-term GT enthusiasts.

DRIVE - LINE:

Under the bonnet sits Ford’s 351ci Cleveland V8, widely regarded as one of the most robust and respected Australian performance engines of the era. Known for its strength, torque delivery, and competition pedigree, the Cleveland has earned legendary status. This example retains a correct ‘D-block’ engine with a May 1970 casting date, indicating the engine is most likely an early replacement rather than the original factory-installed unit. The engine number stamping matches the vehicle’s chassis number, and while the car has historically been sold previously as a matching-numbers example, we believe it is best described as an early replacement. Power is delivered through the factory 4-speed manual Toploader gearbox, long regarded as one of the toughest production manual transmissions fitted to an Australian performance sedan. Final drive is via the formidable Ford 9-inch limited-slip differential, fitted with 28-spline axles, Traction-Lok LSD, and the correct 3.0:1 manual ratio — completing a drivetrain combination widely regarded as rock solid.

Factory original 5-slot wheels fitted with high-quality Coker Classic red wall tyres complete the package.

EXTERIOR:

The body presents straight and true, with consistent panel fit and alignment throughout. The Yellow Ochre paintwork, believed to be over 20 years old, retains good depth and gloss with only minor age-related blemishes. Overall, it reflects a well-executed older restoration that has been carefully maintained and remains highly presentable. Bumpers, exterior trim, lenses, and lighting are all in good order and appear largely original. A very strong-looking example overall.

INTERIOR:

The interior presents very cleanly and in excellent condition, with seats re-trimmed in Saddle GT vinyl consistent with factory S-code specification and perfectly matched to the exterior colour combination. The door cards are original day-one items from 1970. From headlining to carpets, the cabin presents in very good condition. All GT instrumentation and interior trim remain correct, reflecting the car’s originality and period correctness.

SUMMARY:

A genuine 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT 4-speed manual is always a compelling proposition, and this example offers the right balance of authenticity, documentation, mechanical integrity, and presentation.

Featuring Ford’s most respected performance driveline combination and supported by an ICAARS certification, this well-known XY GT represents one of Australia’s greatest classic cars.

An Australian muscle car icon, offered with a sensible reserve.
