SUMMARY:

This genuine 1969 Holden HT GTS Monaro represents an appealing example of Holden’s landmark first-generation performance coupe, combining genuine 80737 GTS identity with an upgraded Holden 308ci V8, Powerglide automatic transmission and Chevrolet 10-bolt limited-slip differential.

Its identification plate confirms this as an early Sydney-built HT GTS Monaro coupe, carrying Body No. 388-H5. Originally manufactured as a six-cylinder, four-speed manual GTS, it has subsequently been upgraded to its present Holden 5.0-litre V8 and automatic specification, delivering greater performance while retaining the identity and unmistakable styling of a genuine HT GTS Monaro.

Introduced in June 1969, the HT represented an important evolution of Holden’s original Monaro formula. While retaining the celebrated pillarless two-door coupe body introduced with the HK, the HT received revised styling, improved refinement and a more comprehensive GTS equipment package.

Standard GTS presentation included twin bonnet scoops flanking prominent central bonnet stripes, bold side striping, blacked-out sill panels and a blacked-out rear panel between the larger two-section tail-lights. GTS badging, distinctive wheel treatments and additional exterior detailing further separated the model from the regular Monaro coupe.

The HT GTS also introduced a full set of round sports instruments in place of the HK model’s strip-style speedometer and console-mounted tachometer. Its comprehensive instrumentation incorporated a circular speedometer and tachometer, together with gauges for fuel level, amperage, oil pressure and coolant temperature.

Further GTS appointments included front bucket seats, a full-length centre console, floor-mounted transmission control, sports steering wheel and model-specific interior trim. Front disc brakes were also standard equipment on HT GTS models, reinforcing that the GTS represented considerably more than a cosmetic enhancement over the regular Monaro.

The current V8 mechanical specification makes this Monaro particularly well suited to effortless weekend and long-distance cruising. The Holden 308 delivers strong low-speed torque, while the Powerglide provides smooth and uncomplicated operation. Combined with the limited-slip rear axle, the result is an Australian muscle cruiser presented within one of Holden’s most celebrated body designs.

Externally, the Monaro has been professionally refinished in striking Monza Blue, a colour that beautifully complements the coupe’s sweeping roofline, broad rear quarters and timeless pillarless silhouette. Approximately nine years ago, the body was reportedly stripped back to bare metal before being refinished in acrylic paint. The vendor advises that the car was an exceptionally clean, straight and largely corrosion-free example before the work commenced.

The interior was completely refurbished approximately four years ago and presents in beautiful, unmarked condition. The work included new carpets, headlining, door trims and seat upholstery, with houndstooth inserts providing the distinctive atmosphere associated with Holden’s Monaro GTS range. The dashboard and GTS instrumentation are understood to remain original.

The car also benefits from notable long-term ownership history. The current custodian has owned the Monaro for approximately 11 years, while the previous owner reportedly retained it for more than 34 years.

Genuine HT GTS Monaros remain among Australia’s most recognisable and sought-after classic performance cars. This example combines genuine 80737 GTS identity with a desirable Holden 308 V8, automatic transmission, limited-slip differential and an exceptional history of long-term ownership.

Presented in striking Monza Blue with a beautifully refurbished GTS interior and muscular Holden V8 driveline, this 1969 HT GTS Monaro offers an exciting opportunity to secure a genuine early Holden GTS coupe configured for easy classic Australian muscle car cruising in style.
