SUMMARY:

Built at Ford's Broadmeadows Assembly Plant in October 1973, the very first month of XB GT production, this remarkable example is documented by its accompanying ACCHS report as the 55th XB GT produced.

Finished in its original factory Mulberry Metallic (Paint Code 6) over the striking White Vinyl (Trim Code W) interior, this genuine XB GT represents everything that was bold about Australian performance cars of the early 1970s. Combined with its factory Golde wind-back sunroof, electric windows and extensive luxury specification, this would have been one wild-looking Australian muscle car when it first hit the road in 1973.

At its heart remains the factory original matching-numbers 351ci Cleveland V8, retaining its early two-dot cylinder heads and correctly dated engine block when cast in the USA. The block carries casting date code 3D26 – April 26, 1973, correctly predating the car's October 1973 Broadmeadows assembly. The Cleveland is paired with the factory FMX three-speed T-bar automatic transmission, sending power through Ford's heavy-duty nine-inch limited-slip differential.

The GT's performance specification is further complemented by its factory rear tramp-rod suspension and four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes, the latter being an important development introduced with the XB GT and providing braking performance to match the substantial torque of the 351 Cleveland.

Originally sold through Bryan Burt Ford, this example was ordered with an impressive list of factory luxury equipment including the highly desirable Golde wind-back sunroof, integrated air conditioning, power steering, electric windows and radio/cassette player. Combined with the automatic transmission, White interior and dramatic Mulberry Metallic exterior, the specification transformed this GT into a genuine high-performance grand tourer and one of the most distinctive Australian cars available at the time.

Its very early production also provides an interesting insight into Ford Australia's transition into XB GT manufacture. This car is believed to retain its early XY GT style steering wheel adapted by Ford Australia to suit the XB's revised controls, an unusual feature associated with the earliest stages of XB production when correct wheel centers were not in production line stock. Together with its first-month build date, it represents a fascinating detail from the changeover between two generations of Ford Australia's celebrated Falcon GT.

Having recently emerged after approximately 17 years stored in a garage beneath protective blankets, the car presents as an excellent and highly authentic basis for further improvement. Prior to being driven to the Chicane Auctions showroom, it underwent mechanical servicing including the fitment of new front brake calipers. The Mulberry Metallic paintwork, which is believed to be over 20+ years old, shows no outward sign of corrosion or bubbling and continues to retain an impressive shine while the whole body presents well.

Some restoration will be required should the next owner wish to return the car to showroom specification, with attention primarily required to areas including the interior and further mechanical recommissioning. The air-conditioning compressor component is supplied with the vehicle for refitting, while the currently fitted LPG equipment can easily be removed to return the car closer to its original factory presentation.

With its first-month October 1973 production, matching-numbers 351 Cleveland V8, exceptional factory option list and extraordinary Mulberry Metallic over White colour combination, this genuine XB GT Sedan represents a particularly interesting example of one of Australia's most recognisable muscle cars.

Presented with documented early production, matching-numbers Cleveland power and a specification that perfectly captures the extravagance of the era, this highly optioned Ford Falcon XB GT offers an exciting opportunity to preserve, improve and enjoy a very distinctive piece of Australian performance-car history.
