Produced between 1970 and 1972, the Ford Falcon XY Panelvan was the hardworking backbone of Ford’s celebrated XY range. With only 4,955 built, few have survived the decades, making it one of the rarest body styles today. Buyers could choose from robust six-cylinder options through to full V8 power, paired with either manual or automatic transmissions. With its unmistakable Aussie character, the XY Panelvan is an rarely seen icon of Ford Australia’s golden era.
Looks can be deceiving…. On offer is a rare windowless 1972 Ford Falcon XY Panelvan that has undergone a no-expense-spared nut-and-bolt rebuild of the entire driveline, running gear, floor pan, wiring and many interior components. Stripped to a bare shell and mounted on a rotisserie so that every mechanical component, floor pan and engine bay item could be renewed by the respected XY Panelvan restoration expert John Parker, to be used as his own car.
Completed in 2023 and traveled just 118 miles since completion, it presents as a mechanically brand new van underneath its original exterior. Leave as is or paint with your own color or style.
The entire driveline has been rebuilt to close to new standard. Upgraded power comes from a fully reconditioned 302ci Windsor V8 with reconditioned heads, mild camshaft, Holley Dominator manifold, a reconditioned Holley 600 carburettor and new distributor with electronic ignition. Exhaust gases exit via brand-new Pacemaker headers into a completely new twin exhaust system, giving it a tough note.
Behind the engine, the 4-speed gearbox and differential have been fully rebuilt, while the suspension, steering, and braking systems have all been completely renewed. Every suspension bush, ball joint, tie rod, caliper, drums, brake lines, brake booster, fuel system and lines, together with a full vehicle wiring loom — has been replaced with new or renewed components.
In essence, every nut, bolt, clip, and wear item beneath the surface has been restored or replaced, resulting in a Panelvan that drives, handles, and stops — with the reliability and confidence, just as it did when new. This reflects countless man-hours and an unflinching use of new parts throughout.
The rare windowless exterior remains untouched, wearing honest imperfections earned over five decades. This patina tells the story of a cared for Falcon van that hides nothing with its honest and rust free steel. All this gives the new Owner the choice to preserve its survivor appeal or respray it into a show-quality finish. As part of the full drive-line restoration, the car was placed on a rotisserie and the Floor pans were rubbed back and coated as per factory for a perfectly clean underneath. Very few windowless XY Panelvans remain in such unmolested, straight and dry form, making this an extremely rare opportunity for those who know.
The cabin has been mildly restored with all the important items, to complement the new driveline. The dash was refurbished by Mark Goode and all dash wiring and gauges were completely renewed. The bucket seats were professionally stripped down and rebuilt by Mickz Trimming, with frames repaired and foams replaced for a comfortable drive. An original XY GT steering wheel was sourced and fitted. A full length GT console surrounds the GT 4 speed shifter, with fresh Deep-pile black GT carpets round out the package inside.
Of note, the bare rear of the van show evidence of great times past — with “Michelle loves Dave” scratched into the inner wall and “Cathy” also making sure she left her mark inside, too. If only Aussie panelvan walls could talk.
This 1972 Ford Falcon XY Panelvan represents the very best of both worlds — a windowless survivor body, combined with a complete nut-and-bolt rebuild of the complete driveline, wiring, floor pans and engine bay that is virtually brand new.
Completed in 2023, it’s offered as a turn key V8 Panelvan, ready to drive for the next 50 years. With so few XY Panelvans surviving in complete, solid windowless form, this mechanically new – yet cosmetically original example is a standout. Previously registered to this van – Victorian ‘XY V8 PV’ number plates are available separately on request.
Fantastic possibility to style in the manner of your liking or just drive into the sunset. Only driven once (119 miles) since rebuild. A rare, cool car.
