1970 FORD XY GT - PASSED IN $305,000 +BP

MODEL OVERVIEW

Forged in the heat of competition and unleashed on roads in 1970, the Ford Falcon XY GT remains one of the greatest legends of the Australian muscle car era. Powered by the D block 351ci Cleveland V8 and rock-solid driveline, the XY GT wasn’t just built to perform — it was built to win. And win it did, conquering the 1971 Bathurst 500 and etching its name into Australian motorsport history. With its signature ‘Shaker’ induction scoop snarling through the bonnet and Bathurst-bred engineering under the skin, the XY GT became a symbol of power, pride, and performance. Produced for only two years, the XY GT was built in very limited numbers — 757 units in 1970, 800 in 1971 and 300 units of the ultimate Phase III variant. An icon of Australian motoring culture.

DRIVELINE

This GT is powered by its matching-numbers (T-code) 351 cubic inch Cleveland 4V ‘D Block’ V8 showing its correct casting date 9M3 for December 1969. Rebuilt to correct GT specification and therefor assumed to deliver a factory-rated 300 horsepower and 515Nm of torque. During the complete restoration in 2006, the original automatic transmission was replaced with a correct Toploader 4-speed manual gearbox, enhancing driver engagement while maintaining period authenticity. Power is fed to the rear wheels through Ford’s renowned 9-inch limited-slip differential with heavy-duty 28-spline axles and a gear ratio of 3:5.1, delivering strong mid-range punch and effortless highway cruising. A factory-style dual exhaust system amplifies the V8’s distinctive soundtrack, completing a driveline package that helped make the XY GT one of the most respected performance sedans of its era. Supporting the mechanical package is all original style and settings uprated heavy-duty suspension, featuring stiffer front coils, reinforced rear leaf springs, and a larger diameter front sway bar — sharpening handling response without sacrificing the Falcon’s famed ride comfort. Mechanically, every major and minor component was rebuilt or replaced to near-factory standards, ensuring the car not only looks the same, but also drives exactly as Ford intended. Beneath, the undercarriage presents to the absolute highest standard, further reflecting the extraordinary level of craftsmanship invested throughout the restoration. Just amazing for a restoration completed nearly 20 years ago.

This car proudly rolls on all genuine 5-slot GT wheels with Firestone Supreme Redline tyres, completing its correct stance and unmistakable road presence as Ford Australia’s king in the golden muscle car era.

EXTERIOR

The body of this stunning XY GT was stripped to bare metal and professionally refinished in its original Track Red, accented by the correct factory-style satin blackouts across the bonnet and rear panels. The results are breathtaking, with laser-straight panel fit, crisp shut lines, and a deep, glossy finish that recalls the proud showroom displays of 1970. All exterior trim, chrome, and brightwork have either been restored or replaced to a factory-correct standard. All window glass has been replaced with new, ensuring the visual presentation matches the exceptional mechanicals underneath. The authentic presence of the car is powerful, honoring one of Ford’s greatest ever muscle car designs.

INTERIOR

Inside, the XY GT presents an interior restored to near factory-new condition, showcasing the same level of dedication and craftsmanship seen throughout the car. Every component was carefully assessed, cleaned, renewed, or sympathetically refurbished as needed to ensure the cabin recaptured its original 1970 showroom feel. Where possible, exceptional original pieces such as the door cards — still remarkably well-preserved after more than 50 years — were retained to honour the car’s authenticity and character. New seat trims were expertly installed in the correct factory Black Vinyl, bringing a fresh, tight, factory-correct look and feel to the seating surfaces. A brand-new factory-style hoodlining was fitted, restoring the crisp, taut finish across the roof, while the dashboard bezels were painstakingly re-chromed to revive the GT’s distinctive brightwork detail. All instrumentation, switches, and interior fittings were either restored or meticulously refurbished, ensuring every touchpoint looks and feels just as it would have when the car first left the dealership. The result is an interior that transports you directly back to 1970 — a space where authenticity, craftsmanship, and classic Australian muscle car spirit come together perfectly.
