1971 FORD ESCORT TWIN CAM - SOLD $80,000 Inc. BP
MODEL OVERVIEW:
The 1971 Ford Escort Twin Cam was a competition bred rally weapon, developed by Ford UK’s Motorsport Department with a total of 1263 built Worldwide. Australian delivered examples were assembled at Homebush NSW in small numbers to meet Australian market compliance and local motorsport homologation regulations. The CK49 Twin Cam was a true motorsport thoroughbred from inception, engineered to dominate rally and circuit events with with its unique powertrain derived from the all conquering Lotus Cortina.
The Twin Cam was not only equipped with the high-revving Lotus engine but featured the competition-spec Type 49 bodyshell. This shell was specifically designed with a range of performance enhancements, including double-skin strut tops, reinforced chassis and inner guards, radius rod rear suspension, rear stone guard protection and a boot-mounted battery tray to name just a few. Additionally, factory 20mm flared front and rear guards allowed for the use of wider competition wheels— all key features of this racing homologation special.
With a claimed top speed of over 180 km/h and agility that made it a giant-killer in its class, the 1971 Escort Twin Cam remains one of the most coveted small performance Fords ever sold in Australia. Its combination of Lotus-derived engineering, compact dimensions, and race-bred suspension made it a formidable force in both period competition and modern historic racing.
AUCTION CAR:
This rare vehicle is a genuine Australian-delivered Escort Twin Cam, one of the special CK49 cars built for the Australian market. It is recorded on the Australian RS Owners Club register and the Australian Twin Cam Escort Register, confirming its provenance.
Owned and largely restored over a 30-year period by an auto industry professional, before being completed and put back on the road in the last 12 months by the current vendor. This Escort Twin Cam has benefited from a high quality restoration, preserving the integrity of its factory design with many features close to how it was originally delivered in 1971.
DRIVE-LINE:
Powering the car is its era-correct Lotus 701M 6015-A “L” block engine, rebuilt by known Lotus engine specialist Jack Godbehear and is said to feature slightly higher lift camshafts, enhancing performance while maintaining drivability. It has seen minimal mileage since the rebuild and remains in excellent mechanical condition. Fuel delivery is via the correct twin Weber carburettors, which are finely tuned and responsive.
The only deviation from original specification is the fitment of a modern electronic distributor, a reversible upgrade with the original distributor supplied with the sale, that enhances reliability and cold starting without altering the car’s character. All suspension components, bushings, and mechanical systems were renewed or replaced during the restoration, with very limited use since completion. The car rides on period-style Superlite wheels, reminiscent of those fitted to competition cars of the era, providing an appropriate and visually appealing finishing touch.
EXTERIOR:
Originally delivered in Bronze Wine, this Twin Cam was professionally repainted in Ultra White, a common CK49 Escort color chosen as the Owners favored choice. The panel fit and finish are of a high standard, and the restoration included the replacement of all rubbers, seals, and external trims. The paintwork shows a deep gloss, and the obvious high level of preparation is evident in the quality of the panel alignment and fitment. During the restoration, the grille was converted to the UK style round headlight, as the Owners preferred style. The original Aust. Spec. square headlight grille and panel are included in the sale. Importantly, this car retains its original genuine CK49 competition bodyshell, which features numerous key factory enhancements.
INTERIOR:
The interior has been restored to a high standard, reflecting both the originality of the car and the professional background of its restorer. The performance six-gauge instrument cluster is clear and fully functional, with the dash fascia, pad, and all switchgear remaining clean, crisp, and unmarked. The black vinyl seats, door cards, roof lining, and carpets all present beautifully, free of any noticeable wear or ageing. The original steering wheel is still in place, and the interior has not been modified with any other aftermarket accessories or trim. The overall presentation is faithful to factory specification and exceptionally clean throughout.
