1978 HOLDEN HZ GTS SEDAN - SOLD: $66,750 +BP

MODEL OVERVIEW

The Holden HZ GTS represents the final and finest iteration of the Kingswood-based GTS lineage — an iconic Australian muscle car that stood out for its improved driving dynamics. Introduced in late 1977, the HZ GTS featured the now-famous four-headlight grille, aggressive front and rear Spoilers, and the acclaimed Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) package. Fitted as standard with four-wheel disc brakes, a full GTS sports instrumentation dashboard, factory alloy wheels with radial tyres, and a more refined interior layout, the HZ GTS offered an ideal mix of luxury and performance. Initially released with engine options including the 4.2L and 5.0L V8s, by June 1978, the L31 5.0-litre V8 became the standard powerplant—cementing the car’s appeal to performance-minded buyers. With production ceasing in December 1978 and just 1,438 units built, the HZ GTS marked the end of the Kingswood-based four-door GTS era, closing a celebrated chapter in Holden history.

1978 HOLDEN HZ GTS SEDAN

Chicane Auctions is proud to present this exceptional, genuine two-owner 1978 Holden HZ GTS, showing just 80,888 kilometres and retains its original matching-numbers chassis and driveline with all ID tags in place, never removed. Accompanied by its original Holden factory service books and original number plates, this is a true survivor with outstanding provenance and authenticity. Highly optioned from new, it features the sought-after L31 5.0-litre V8 engine paired with a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering and a preserved interior trimmed in 63X Buckskin Long Grain Vinyl with Tartan cloth inserts and Bronze loop pile carpet. With a fully documented, verified history from new, this HZ GTS stands as an exceptional and highly collectible example of the final Kingswood-based GTS V8 — an increasingly rare opportunity for the discerning Holden enthusiast or collector.

MECHANICAL

Under the bonnet lies the original matching-numbers QT-coded L31 5.0-litre V8, paired with its factory Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission. The engine remains in completely standard condition and has been carefully maintained, with the vendor driving the car every three months over the past 25 years to ensure mechanical health. Only standard serviceable items have been replaced throughout its life—brake components, exhaust system, and most recently, a full service with radiator flush and air-conditioning compressor changed over for new. The car remains in excellent running order and was driven from South-East Victoria directly into the Chicane showroom for this auction.

EXTERIOR

This HZ GTS retains its original Palais White factory paint now showing flaking and lots of aged patina. While surface rust is visible in some small exposed areas, it remains light, with no bubbling or deterioration found in sills or floor pans. Panel alignment is excellent throughout and all original side and rear glass is unmarked. The windscreen condition is a little average being a country car. The nose cone and front bumper were resprayed upon 2nd owner taking ownership in the late 90’s, to clean up stone chips. Impressively, the inner door jambs, bonnet and boot paint remain factory fresh and highly unblemished.

INTERIOR

The cabin of this HZ GTS is a stand out and presents in completely original excellent condition, offering a true look back into Holden’s late 1970s design. Its 63X Trim Code – Buckskin Long Grain Vinyl with Tartan inserts and Bronze Loop Carpet is sensational. The dashboard, gauges and switchgear are in near showroom-quality condition, while the original seats, carpets, and headlining show minimal wear and appear highly unmarked. A testament to its preservation, even the original dash clock still ticks, capturing the essence of what makes this example so special.

HISTORY

This is a verified two-owner vehicle, with a truly personal and well-documented history. Purchased new by the current Owners neighbour and family friend in 1978, it has remained cherished ever since. The current owner, who grew up with the car and eventually purchased it in 1998, has preserved its originality with deep affection and care over the past 25 years. Recently serviced for this sale, with a new Fuel and Water Pump, new Air Conditioning Compressor, a full service and tune for the next owner to turn the key and enjoy.
