MODEL OVERVIEW

The 1968 Holden Monaro HK GTS 327 known as the ‘Bathurst’ stands as one of Australia’s most iconic and collectable muscle cars. Purpose-built to win at the nation’s toughest racetracks, went on to secure Holdens first win the 1968 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Bathurst. As a homologation special, the Monaro GTS 327 featured the potent Chevrolet 327-cubic inch V8, delivering a good 250 horsepower, paired with a close-ratio Saginaw 4-speed manual and a 10-bolt Posi-traction limited-slip differential — a drivetrain engineered for endurance and speed. Distinguishable by its aggressive stance, signature striping and 327 badging, this model wasn’t just about raw power; it showcased carefully tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, and enhanced cooling, all aimed at transforming the Monaro from a stylish grand tourer into a serious race contender. Its success at winning Bathurst cemented Holden’s reputation as a force in Australian motorsport and made the GTS 327 a sought-after icon among collectors and enthusiasts to this day.

1968 HOLDEN MONARO HK GTS 327 ‘BATHURST’

Chicane Auctions are proud to present this restored 1968 Holden Monaro HK GTS 327 ‘81837’ Type 1, as a great example of one of Australia’s most iconic and beautiful muscle cars. Finished in its factory-correct Bright Blue Metallic (code 587-1764) over a black vinyl interior (code 10X), this Monaro has been restored with a ground-up restoration of mostly all mechanicals, interior and exterior items.

DRIVELINE

Under the bonnet lies a 1968 era correct Tonawanda built Chevrolet 327 V8 — (Casting 3941660, dated 12 March 1968) — presented in factory 250hp specification. This high torque small-block V8 is paired with its Saginaw close-ratio 4-speed manual gearbox, celebrated for its strength and sharp shifts. Delivering power to the rear wheels is the 10-bolt Posi-traction Salisbury limited-slip differential together with its Radius Rod suspension set up. All items are told to be rebuilt together with all suspension and brake items during the car’s restoration. This powertrain, driveline and suspension combination gave the GTS 327 its legendary performance and cemented the Monaro as a Bathurst-winning machine.

EXTERIOR

Presented in factory code Bright Blue Metallic, this Monaro looks stunning from every angle. The shinning finish accentuates the car’s sweeping coupe profile, complemented by factory black striping and striking chrome details front and rear. The 327 badging proudly underscores its pedigree, while its muscular stance serves as a reminder that it was built to handle. The original style wheels and hubcaps are complete with near new BF Goodrich Silvertown redline tyres. Inspection is recommended to assess the extent of some imperfections in the paintwork, as some preparation issues have emerged that are not visible in photos. A fantastic looking car, that may be arguably Holden’s best looking 2 door design.

INTERIOR

The interior of the 1968 Holden Monaro HK GTS 327 is a masterclass in late-1960s Australian muscle car design, combining racing style with understated elegance. Finished in factory-correct black vinyl (trim code 1153-10X), the cabin features its nicely bolstered bucket seats that provide both comfort and support, complemented by matching door trims and a distinctive woodgrain-accented dash that houses the iconic GTS instrument cluster. The Woodgrain GTS steering wheel, 7,000 Tacho and four speed shifter reinforce the car’s performance character, while chrome highlights and detailed switchgear reflect Holden’s attention to detail. Every element, from the padded crash pad to the bright GTS badging, was designed to remind drivers they were sitting in something special. All presented in great condition.
