General Motors Australia exported the Holden Monaro to South Africa from 1969 to 1973. These cars were sent to South Africa in CKD form from Holden, assembled and then badged as Chevrolet’s at their Port Elizabeth plant.
Initially, from 1969 to 1971, the vehicles sent were HT models & marketed as Holden Monaro’s. From 1971 to 1973, HG Models were used & branded as the Chevrolet SS.
In 1972, there were four versions: the 308, available in manual or automatic with 179 kW, and two 350 versions, with the manual producing 224 kW and a lower-compression automatic (Powerglide) delivering 205 kW.
The rarer CHEVROLET SS 350 used the legendary Chevrolet 350 V8 as specified to the HG Monaro GTS. Manual Chevrolet SS 350’s were also fitted with larger 25 gallon Bathurst fuel tanks.
A rare Chevrolet SS 350 with Original Matching Numbers Chevrolet 350 engine. Featuring a very nice original standout color scheme of Daytona Bronze Metallic, chrome trim styled Vinyl roof with contrasting Black & Orange Houndstooth Interior. Recently completed a restoration with new paintwork, vinyl top, new carpets, Holden HG front fenders / grille fitted and all Mechanicals checked and serviced. Good looking car.
All mechanicals are kept as per factory fitted with its mighty and original Chevrolet 350 Small Block fitted from new. The engine is believed to have been rebuilt as it drives strongly. The Powerglide Automatic Transmission shifts seamlessly and is bullet proof. The differential is the Factory V8 Salisbury unit. All brakes and suspension have been serviced and replaced if necessary for when this car was recently Victorian registered, which required a full RWC and inspection by Vicroads at the time.
Recently painted in original Daytona Bronze Metallic, the body is very straight and presents beautifully. Having lived in a dry climate, this example shows zero sign of corrosion. A New Vinyl roof was fitted with correct sculptured stainless metal trim.
Original style Black & Orange Houndstooth interior has been recently renewed as with the carpet & headlining. Door cards are original items in good condition. Dash fascia & T-Bar Console are presented in its original wood veneer and factory surrounds. Sports Instruments are all in good working order in the same arrangement as a HG Monaro GTS.
Chevrolet SS 350’s from South Africa are an underrated car, when compared to an Australian Monaro price tag, with an original 350 V8 like this car has. This example, fitted with its matching numbers Chevrolet 350 engine is a very good vehicle to consider taking home for many reasons.
